Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC) was established in 1984 in the UK by consolidation of Business Education Council (BEC) and Technology Education Council (TEC). In 1996, BTEC further consolidated with University of London Examination & Assessment Council (ULEAC) to set up Edexcel. Its name is a portmanteau word derived from the words "educational" and "excellence".

Edexcel is wholly owned by the private-sector Pearson PLC, a UK-based media and publishing conglomerate. It is the leading provider of internationally recognised qualifications. As the UK's largest awarding body, Edexcel offers qualifications such as GCSE (General Certificates of Secondary Education), GCE (General Certificate of Education) and BTEC, etc.

Compass College is an accredited centre for the Edexcel in respect of BTEC programmes in Hong Kong
